A while ago, I was sitting in my lounge after a coaching session with someone who couldn’t see how far they had come. And I was reflecting. Big time.
They had raised children, been through a couple of divorces, been a step-parent, and had been mistreated by every man they had ever been with (not anymore)—and this isn’t even half of it. In the midst of all of this, they had managed to send two kids off to university, co-parent a young child with a bona fide narcissist, start and run their own business, and keep a roof over their heads. Yet, in that moment, she couldn’t see what a powerhouse she was. She felt a failure and as if she couldn't go on anymore.
She does now, but that's because she's done the work. At the time, though, she felt like one massive failure.
It was hard to hear someone not recognise that they had more strength than they realised. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t be talking to me, they wouldn’t be trying, they wouldn’t still be fighting—they might not even be here.
When we hit tough points in our lives, when it feels like all hope is gone, it’s incredibly difficult to measure how far we’ve come, because we never think to keep track of it.
And it got me thinking.
We track progress in so many areas of life. At work, we have appraisals; we track how much weight we’ve lost, or how much money we have (or don’t have) in the bank. We monitor and track all sorts of things, but we never track our emotions. So, when something happens and we feel helpless, we experience that emotion as if for the first time. We don’t say, “Okay, this third breakup won’t hurt as much because I’ve been through it twice before.”
We don’t measure or track our emotional progress, so any emotional blow hits us as if it’s the very first time we’re feeling it.

And that's when it struck me.
Create something that, in those tough moments—when it feels like there’s no hope, no way forward, and nowhere left to turn—we can turn to the one person who is resilient, trustworthy, and has all the answers:
Ourselves.
